How to improve the 3 Highs: Blood Pressure, Diabetes and Cholesterol

It scares me to see how young people are getting High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and high Cholesterol. It is no longer the disease of old age and most of it is due to our diet and lifestyle. Every time I go for my regular thyroid check up I see so many overweight patients, most of them no older than 40 years old, leaving the clinic with bags full of medicine. All suffering from HBP, Diabetes or High Blood Lipid (Cholesterol). The scariest part is that they have to continue taking these for the rest of their lives and in most cases the dosage keeps increasing. However the situation is reversible and it is possible to reduce the medications and live a better quality lifestyle.

What is High Blood Pressure?

Blood pressure refers to the force of blood pushing against artery walls as it courses through the body. When it’s too high, it raises the heart’s workload and can cause serious damage to the arteries. Over time, uncontrolled high blood pressure increases the risk of heart disease, stroke, and kidney. High blood pressure is sometimes called a silent killer because it may have no outward symptoms for years. In fact, 1 in 5 people with the condition don’t know they have it.

blood-pressure

Symptoms

People with blood pressure readings of 130/90 or higher, taken on at least two occasions, are said to have high blood pressure. For those over age 60, readings of 150/90 or higher indicate high blood pressure.

Some people never get any symptoms and if they don’t measure their blood pressure regularly, they don’t even know they have it. At times there are some signs you can observe, such as:

  • Dark Lips
  • Reddish Face
  • Unable to sleep
  • Ringing in the ear

Diabetes

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. I will try to explain this in a simplest way possible as previously I didn’t really understand how this disease works, but it is rather easy to understand. When our pancreas is working properly, beta cells produce adequate amount of insulin. Our bodies convert food into glucose and it is used as energy for our cells. Insulin then acts as a ‘key’ to open up our cells and let the glucose enter the cells. Then the cells use the glucose as energy source and therefore we get healthy organs.

diabetes-blood-drop

However, in diabetes patients not enough insulin is being produced which means glucose is unable to enter the cells. This leaves a lot of glucose in the blood stream unable to be utilized.  Without insulin, there is no “key.” So, the sugar stays — and builds up– in the blood. The result: the body’s cells starve from the lack of glucose.  And, if left untreated, the high level of “blood sugar” can damage eyes, kidneys, nerves, and the heart, and can also lead to coma and death.

Why does diabetes happen?

  1. Beta cells can’t produce enough insulin
  2. Beta cells can’t produce any insulin
  3. Cells become insulin resistant

Type 1 Diabetes (5-10%)

With type 1 diabetes, the body’s immune system attacks part of its own pancreas. Scientists are not sure why. But the immune system mistakenly sees the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas as foreign, and destroys them. This attack is known as “autoimmune” disease.

  • Patients are usually insulin dependent (injections)
  • Could be genetic
  • Due to virus attack
  • Auto immune problem
  • The challenge with this treatment is that it’s often not possible to know precisely how much insulin to take

Gestational Diabetes (3-5%)

Happens in some pregnancies; hormones affect sensitivity of the body to glucose. However, untreated or poorly controlled gestational diabetes can hurt your baby. When you have gestational diabetes, your pancreas works overtime to produce insulin, but the insulin does not lower your blood glucose levels. Although insulin does not cross the placenta, glucose and other nutrients do. So extra blood glucose goes through the placenta, giving the baby high blood glucose levels.

Symptoms

  • Hungry often (cells are starving)
  • Frequent Urination
  • Tired and lethargic easily
  • Sweating
  • Weight Loss
  • Thirsty
  • Itchiness
  • Vaginal Infections
  • Wounds take longer to heal
  • Blurry vision

High Blood Lipids (Cholesterol)

A lipid disorder means that you have high levels of either low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, or elevated levels of fats called triglycerides. I would like to stress here that nobody should ignore the high cholesterol readings. Over the past few years I’ve seen people completely ignore their elevated cholesterol readings because it is not ‘that’ high. However the chances of heart attack with elevated cholesterol readings are very high. It is best to find natural ways to lower the cholesterol before it clogs your arteries.

detail_artery_wall_plaque

Plaque Formation

  • Damaged endothelium; cholesterol, smoking, HBP, diabetes
  • Cholesterol invasion; LDL accumulates in the artery
  • Plaque formation; over time the plaque forms and limits blood flow

How is it detected?

High cholesterol and triglyceride levels can be detected by a blood test called a lipid profile, or lipid panel. A lipid profile measures your total cholesterol (both LDL and HDL cholesterol) and triglycerides. Your doctor will likely ask you to avoid eating and drinking liquids other than water for at least 10 to 12 hours before this test.

High Blood Lipid Readings

The only time LDL (the so-called “bad”) cholesterol is a problem is if it’s Oxidized. Oxidized LDL cholesterol sticks to the lining of arteries and begins the process of Inflammation. It is this inflammation that is the true cause of heart disease.

Non-oxidized LDL is pretty much harmless.

Causes of the 3 Highs:

  • 60% controlled by us; nutrition, exercise, stress
  • Others:
  • 15% inherited
  • 7% geography
  • 10% living conditions
  • 8% drugs

As you can see, only 15% of the cases are inherited so we can’t blame it on our genes. Most of the damage cause to our bodies is done by ourselves.

How can Lingzhi help?

Lingzhi and Blood Pressure:

Research at China Tongji Medical University showed that after taking 12 capsules of Yung Kien Ganoderma per day for 2 weeks, the rate of platelet aggregation was inhibited by up to 32%

Prevents hardening of blood vessels – elasticity of blood vessels becomes compromised when there is too much fat and cholesterol in the blood, this also causes high blood pressure. Lingzhi is very effective in lowering the blood pressure and ensuring the blood vessels remain elastic. The best results were shown in high blood pressure patients who consumed higher doses of lingzhi for minimum of 6 months.

Ganoderma is effective in reducing blood pressure. The most important point is that long-term administration (at least 6 months) of ganoderma is required. Approximately 12 capsules of Yung Kien Ganoderma per day is recommended to see improvement.

  • Dual Regulating
  • Improves Blood Circulation
  • Decrease risk of blood clots forming
  • Prevents hardening of arteries

Linzhi and Diabetes:

  • Polysaccharides protect the pancreas cells
  • Beta cells can live longer and reduce their death rate
  • Eliminates free radicals
  • Increases liver detox function
  • Reduces blood glucose
  • Increases the metabolism of glucose
  • Enhances SOD enzyme – protects pancreas and kidney cells
  • Strengthens and Regulates Immune system

Lingzhi and High Blood Lipids:

Prevents blood clots from forming – just imagine if your blood is full of fat and cholesterol and the circulation is poor due to narrowed arteries, the chances of blood clots forming is very high. Linghzi helps to clean your blood by reducing the fat and cholesterol and also assists in better circulation and therefore the blood flow becomes a lot smoother, preventing strokes and heart attacks from happening. For those who are not familiar, stroke happens when there is a blood clot in the brain and heart attack with a blood clot in the heart. Research at China Tongji Medical University showed that after taking 12 capsules of Yung Kien Ganoderma (lingzhi) per day for 2 weeks, the rate of platelet aggregation was inhibited by up to 32%, and the dry weight of thrombus was reduced by more than 30%. Yung Kien Ganoderma (lingzhi) also reduces the size of thrombi (clots) in atherosclerotic patients.

LZ has the ability to inhibit HMG CoA Reduces enzyme which will lead to the reduction of the cholesterol level. Normally done by Statin drug which has many side effects

  • Reduces LDL & Triglyceride levels
  • Increases HDL (good cholesterol)
  • Controls liver production of cholesterol
  • Reduces oxidation of LDL
  • Ability to inhibit HMG CoA

Love yourself and change your world

Over the last few months of 2015 I’ve been reflecting a lot on mindset and mental health. We always hear people say “its all in your mind” or “think positively”, but what does that really mean? I’ve been reading a few books and spoken to few of my ‘gurus’ and a very similar messages regarding thoughts and positivity keep popping up.

gratitude

When the book The Secret came out, I truly believed the power of tuning into the universe and achieving success through positive thoughts. However, I do think that the book doesn’t really teach you how to apply that day to day and there is more to it then just imagining what you want. I believe gratitude as well as attitude has a lot to do with it. Lately, everywhere I turn somebody is talking about gratitude, and this makes me so happy. We need a lot more positive thoughts and being grateful to overcome all the negativity in today’s society. I think it is so important to be grateful on a daily basis and consciously appreciate all the good things you have in your life.

Another concept I’ve been always rather interested in is karma. However I didn’t quite understand how it works previously. What I find fascinating that in Budhism, karma not only continues from life to life, but karma is changing all the time. With our actions we can change the flow of karma, even few times in the same day. This is why it is very important for us to control our actions and our thoughts. After I’ve read the book ‘The Easiest Way to Live’ by Mabel Katz, a lot of my thoughts and ideas started to make sense. The concept of the book is “Let go of the past, live in the present and change your life forever”. Mabel wrote this book after close guidance by Dr. Ilhaleakala Hew Len who bases his teaching on Ho’oponopono, an ancient Hawaiian art of problem solving. I would strongly recommend everyone to read this book! It is so easy to understand and it teaches step by step how to change your mental outlook of the world. Not only does it teach to show gratitude, but it also teaches us how to take 100% responsibility for all our actions. If we stop blaming others for the situation we are in and instead consciously take the responsibility for our lives, we would be much happier. We are constantly blaming someone; our parents, our partners, our government, the weather, economy, etc.

“We all tend to forget the immerse power of gratitude and take so much for granted because we are too busy focusing on what we don’t have instead of being tankful for what we do have”, Mabel writes. I completely agree with her on this, we have been programmed to always strive for something bigger and better, even though many of us already have everything we need.

the easiest

What I found fascinating is that when we find ourselves in a difficult situations and we get angry, the chemical process of anger that happens inside us lasts only 90 seconds. The rest of the time it is all about how we are reacting to the situation. This has really opened up my eyes to show that we ourselves control everything that happens in our lives. However, it is important to learn how to control and focus the mind in the right direction. This is a process which takes quite a long time and energy, but it is very powerful in achieving happiness in our lives. Event health wise, our mental state is very very important; holding grudges and constantly living under stress (which we cause ourselves) can be extremely damaging to our health. The most immediate sign of not being able to let go is constipation and this in turn can cause many other health problems. That is just one example of health issues due to mental stress.

There are so many different methods of achieving this mental bliss and focus in the right direction. What I find important is that you choose one way and stick with it. Mabel Katz writes in the book “that we must clean and erase our memories and programming in order to achieve true joy and inner peace”. Another very important point of this method is that in order to be happy we need to love ourselves. This is not a new concept and I’m sure you keep hearing it over and over again. This method allows you to achieve this self love and puts you in the right mindset. Loving yourself, just as loving others, takes conscious effort and we need to constantly work on it and improve it. However, what I feel after using this method is that it makes it easier to achieve this.

I’ve covered few different topics in this post, but the main point is that we really need to focus on ourselves and find that peace and happiness within us. Many times by improving this, you can also improve your health. There are times when no western or eastern medication helps a person, even after many attempts, perhaps then it is important to look into what is going on within that person and mentally as well.

If you get a chance do read more about this Ho’oponopono technique as it is quite fascinating.

Why are cold drinks bad for you?

Living in Asia for so many years, I’ve always observed how many people drink warm or sometimes hot water. I’ve always been lectured by my Chinese friends not to consume cold and icy drinks, but I must admit most of the time I chose to ignore them. Back then I didn’t dig deeper to find out why is it so bad to consume cold drinks. After finding out the reason I have been trying to stay away from cold drinks, and now I have it only on very rare occasion.

Three melting ice cubes

So what happens in your body when you drink cold drinks?

When cold water hits the stomach, the body is forced to use energy in order to warm up that liquid inside your body to match that of the body’s natural temperature. This robs your body of the energy it needs to properly process what you have ingested. Instead of working to extract all the foods nutrients, your digestive system is instead working on regulating the temperature of the cold drink.

Studies also indicate that the problem with cold water is that as the liquid passes through your system, the cool temperature solidifies fats from the foods we’ve eaten and thus the body in turn finds it hard to digests the unwanted fats from our stomach.

Ayurvedic doctors are especially again drinking cold water with meals as they say this will cause you to ‘extinguish’ your fire which drives digestion and metabolism. Lately there has been some talks that ice water actually makes you loose weight as your body uses energy to warm it up once ingested. Yes your body metabolism speeds up to about 4 extra calories per 8 ounces of water. However this diverts the energy which is suppose to be used for digestion.

Some doctors believe cold water will solidify the oily stuff that you have just consumed. It will slow down the digestion. Once this “sludge” reacts with the acid, it will break down and be absorbed by the intestine faster than the solid food. It will line the intestine. Very soon, this will turn into fats and lead to cancer.

In Asia, one of the most common questions traditional doctors will ask is if you consume cold drinks. If the answer is yes, they will ask you to stop immediately. I have noticed great improvements with my digestion since I’ve been avoiding cold beverages and I really make the conscious effort to either consume hot drinks or room temperature. I have seen the effect on my daughter as well. We have always been giving her slightly cooler water and on and off she would have this strange cough which was not connected to a flu. So I started giving her warmer water and the cough was completely gone.

Why not give it a try? Replace your cold drinks with warmer ones and see if there is any changes in your digestion or health in general. This could also help you loose weight as your body uses all the energy to digest the food instead of focusing on warming up the ice water you are ingesting. You can even go a step further and have fluids only 30min to 1 hour after your meal as you don’t want to dilute your stomach juices which are used for digestion. This is not such an easy habit to change, but if you chew your food properly, your saliva should be able to push the food down your GI tract without any help from extra liquids.

Stay Healthy,

Alarming Diabetes Figures

Diabetes cases are growing at a very alarming rate, all over the world. According to a study done in 2011, in Malaysia alone more than 15% of the population above 30 years old, reported to have diabetes. It is the number one country in Asean in terms of number of diabetic patients. The figures keep growing rapidly every year and the worse part is that it is so easily preventable. Such simple and easy changes in our diet and lifestyle are  able to prevent most of the diabetic cases.

What is Diabetes?

Diabetes is a metabolic disease in which the body’s inability to produce any or enough insulin causes elevated levels of glucose in the blood. I will try to explain this in a simplest way possible as previously I didn’t really understand how this disease works, but it is rather easy to understand. photo-about-diabetes-2

Type 2 Diabetes (90-95%)

This is also called “adult onset” diabetes, since it typically develops after age 35. People with type 2 are able to produce some of their own insulin. Often, it’s not enough. And sometimes, the insulin will try to serve as the “key” to open the body’s cells, to allow the glucose to enter. But the key won’t work. The cells won’t open. This is called insulin resistance.

  • Non-insulin dependent
  • Due to lifestyle
  • Usually in overweight people – metabolic disorder
  • Dependent on medications to bring the glucose to cells
  • Unless the pancreas stops functioning, then they have to start taking insulin injections

Diabetes Type 2

Gestational Diabetes (3-5%)

Happens in some pregnancies; hormones affect sensitivity of the body to glucose. However, untreated or poorly controlled gestational diabetes can hurt your baby. Symptoms

  • Hungry often (cells are starving)
  • Frequent Urination
  • Tired and lethargic easily
  • Sweating
  • Weight Loss
  • Thirsty
  • Itchiness
  • Vaginal Infections
  • Wounds take longer to heal
  • Blurry vision

Complications linked to badly controlled diabetes:

Below is a list of possible complications that can be caused by badly controlled diabetes:

  • Eye complications – glaucoma, cataracts, diabetic retinopathy, and some others.
  • Foot complications – neuropathy, ulcers, and sometimes gangrene which may require that the foot be amputated
  • Skin complications – people with diabetes are more susceptible to skin infections and skin disorders
  • Heart problems – such as ischemic heart disease, when the blood supply to the heart muscle is diminished
  • Hypertension – common in people with diabetes, which can raise the risk of kidney disease, eye problems, heart attack and stroke
  • Mental health – uncontrolled diabetes raises the risk of suffering from depression, anxiety and some other mental disorders
  • Hearing loss – diabetes patients have a higher risk of developing hearing problems
  • Gum disease – there is a much higher prevalence of gum disease among diabetes patients
  • Gastroparesis – the muscles of the stomach stop working properly
  • Ketoacidosis – a combination of ketosis and acidosis; accumulation of ketone bodies and acidity in the blood.
  • Neuropathy – diabetic neuropathy is a type of nerve damage which can lead to several different problems.
  • HHNS (Hyperosmolar Hyperglycemic Nonketotic Syndrome) – blood glucose levels shoot up too high, and there are no ketones present in the blood or urine. It is an emergency condition.
  • Nephropathy – uncontrolled blood pressure can lead to kidney disease
  • PAD (peripheral arterial disease) – symptoms may include pain in the leg, tingling and sometimes problems walking properly
  • Stroke – if blood pressure, cholesterol levels, and blood glucose levels are not controlled, the risk of stroke increases significantly
  • Erectile dysfunction – male impotence.
  • Infections – people with badly controlled diabetes are much more susceptible to infections
  • Healing of wounds – cuts and lesions take much longer to heal

Managing Diabetes

Once diagnosed it is usually a lifelong illness, but it can be controlled through different lifestyle and diet adjustments. Besides taking medications there are few simple steps we can take in managing as well as preventing further complications.

  • Regular Check ups
  • Exercise
  • Maintaining Healthy Weight / Loose weight if overweight
  • Consuming Complex Carbs
  • Consuming food with Glycemic Index which is lower than 70

Simple carbs when consumes spike up the glucose in the blood very quickly and our pancreas has to work over time to produce a lot of insulin.

Thyroid Imbalance

Being a Hypothyroid patient for a number of years I know personally quite a bit about this topic. Not only through my own symptoms and experience, but through extensive research I did over the years. After finding out I was suffering from thyroid imbalance, I hated the idea of taking hormone replacement therapy for the rest of my life so I wanted to find out if there were any other ways to go about making the thyroid function normally again.

What is Thyroid and its function?

thyroid_gland_diag

The thyroid is a butterfly-shaped gland that sits low on the front of the neck. Your thyroid lies below your Adam’s apple, along the front of the windpipe.

The thyroid secretes several hormones, collectively called thyroid hormones. The main hormone is thyroxine, also called T4. Thyroid hormones act throughout the body, influencing metabolism, growth and development, and body temperature. During infancy and childhood, adequate thyroid hormone is crucial for brain development.

  • To do its job, the thyroid needs a chemical element called iodine that the body absorbs from the foods you eat and the water you drink.
  • The entire body contains about 50 milligrams of iodine. About 1/5 to 1/3 of that supply (10 to 15 milligrams) is stored in your thyroid.
  • The thyroid combines the iodine with tyrosine (an essential amino acid) to make important hormones. Every aspect of your metabolism is regulated by thyroid hormones.
  • Your thyroid produces two main hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine, that influence every cell in your body. They maintain the rate at which your body uses fats and carbohydrates, help control your body temperature, influence your heart rate and help regulate the production of protein.
  • Your thyroid also produces calcitonin, a hormone that helps regulate the amount of calcium in your blood.
  • The rate at which thyroxine and triiodothyronine are released is controlled by your pituitary gland and your hypothalamus — an area at the base of your brain that acts as a thermostat for your whole system.
  • The hypothalamus signals your pituitary gland to make a hormone called thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH). Your pituitary gland then releases TSH — the amount depends on how much thyroxine and triiodothyronine are in your blood. If you don’t have enough thyroxine or triiodothyronine in your blood, your TSH blood level will be above normal; if you have too much, your TSH level will fall below normal. Finally, your thyroid gland regulates its production of hormones based on the amount of TSH it receives.

14755_28_08_12_1_42_27_82361629

What causes your thyroid to go haywire?

Thyroid disease occurs when the thyroid gland doesn’t supply the proper amount of hormones needed by the body. If the thyroid is overactive, it releases too much thyroid hormone into the bloodstream, resulting in hyperthyroidism. (“Hyper” is from the Greek, meaning “over” or “above.”) Hyperthyroidism causes the body to use up energy more quickly than it should, and chemical activity (like metabolism) in the cells speeds up. An underactive thyroid produces too little thyroid hormone, resulting in hypothyroidism. (“Hypo” means “under” or “below.”) When the amount of hormone released into the bloodstream is below normal, the body

It could be genetics, an autoimmune attack, pregnancy, stress, nutritional deficiencies, or toxins in the environment, but experts aren’t entirely sure. Because thyroid hormones far reach in the body—from brain to bowels—diagnosing a disorder can be challenging.

How-to-Recognize-Thyroid-Issues-576x1024

I had most of these symptoms before I was diagnosed and I remember for many years my neck was rather enlarged, but I didn’t realize it was a thyroid problem. After I started taking the medication (hormone replacement therapy) my symptoms slightly improved, but most of them were still there. I still had an enlarged neck, extreme fatigue in the afternoons, brain fog, hair loss, mood swings, easy weight gain and constipation. But my thyroid T4 and T3 levels were normal in my blood test.

I kept researching on diet changes and some natural, herbal supplements to take in order to replace the synthetic hormones. I eliminated some of the damage causing foods from my diet, such as flowery veggies (eg. broccoli) and also duck meat. But there is a list of other food items to avoid:

  • Vegetables: broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, kale, turnips, and bok choy
  • Gluten
  • Soy
  • Fatty Foods
  • Sugary Foods
  • Processed Food
  • Excess Fibre
  • Coffee (together with medication)
  • Alcohol

All these are due to metabolism and absorption of thyroid hormone. Most of the natural ways to control your thyroid hormone production is with a strict diet and adding necessary nutrients and good proteins into your daily meal plan.

Hypo vs Hyper

Thyroid_large

This diagram perfectly summarizes the symptoms and problems faced by Hypothyroid vs. Hyperthyroid patient. In hypothyroidism too little hormone is produced and therefore everything slows down and in hyperthyroidism too much hormone is produced, therefore the body’s metabolic rates speed up. If you look at the signs and symptoms they are mostly totally opposite for the two.

For Hyperthyroidism there are two types of initial treatments, and surgery may follow if there are further complications:

  • Antithyroid medicines work best if you have mild hyperthyroidism, if this is the first time you are being treated for Graves’ disease, if you are younger than 50, or if your thyroid gland is only swollen a little bit (small goiter).
  • Radioactive iodine is often recommended if you have Graves’ disease and are older than 50, or if you have thyroid nodules (toxic multinodular goiter) that are releasing too much thyroid hormone.

My Improvements after consuming Lingzhi and Pollen

As I mentioned earlier, even though I was taking my hormone replacement therapy I still had most of the symptoms and improvement was only slight. Once I learnt that lingzhi and pollen can help in reducing my medication or eventually even completely eliminating it, I was really curious to see the results.

  1. The most obvious and fastest result was that my energy levels improved tremendously. That sluggish and lethargic feeling I used to get after 3pm, was completely gone.
  2. Then, my memory and concentration started improving and I could focus a lot better on my work. That ‘Brain Fog’ which I used to get quite often was no longer there.
  3. After a couple of months, I noticed that my thyroid swelling has gone down a lot, which it was unable to do previously with the medicine.
  4. Period pains were completely gone, and the blood flow became a lot smoother
  5. Constipation improved a lot as well and I don’t gain weight as easily as before.
  6. Hair fall reduced a lot as well

I must say I was quite impressed, as even after taking medication for more than 2 years none of these symptoms were able to improve. Despite telling my doctor all these while that my symptoms are still there, especially the tiredness, she couldn’t help me in any way as my blood tests were showing that the levels were normal.

Just recently I’ve done another blood test and the results show that I actually have antibodies which are attacking my thyroid and doctor said that eventually I will have to keep increasing the dosage of my medicine. But what he doesn’t know is that I hardly take my medication now and the levels are still balanced so lingzhi should be able to help my thyroid to continue working and protect it from the antibodies. This is called Autoimmune disease – Hashimoto thyroiditis. Either caused my genetics or some bacteria/virus infection.

Lingzhi can help both Hypothyroid and Hyperthyroid patients as it  modulates the activity of the thyroid glad so that it functions at its optimum. Pollen, not only brings in the necessary nutrients which your body’s cells need to be healthy, but it also balances the hormones.

For those who experience any of these symptoms mentioned in the diagram please request for a thyroid blood test as those yearly blood examinations sometimes don’t include the thyroid test. Also if you or any of your friends and relatives has an enlargement on the neck, please ask them to check their thyroid levels.

Stay Healthy,

Dina

Healthy Immune System = Healthy Life

Just imagine, 80-90% of diseases are related to you immune system. When we take care of our immune system well and this means keep it at the optimum level, we are very unlikely to get some serious disease. Imbalance in the immune system means you can either have an overactive or under-active immune system.

How does the immune system work?

The immune system is a system of many biological structures and processes within an organism that protects against disease. To function properly, an immune system must detect a wide variety of agents, known as pathogens, from viruses to parasitic worms, and distinguish them from the organism’s own healthy tissue. Read more about immune system in my previous blog entry here.

Internal immune system is made up of white blood cells (WBC) and a healthy person has anywhere between 3,500 to 9,000 WBC. For those who have a weak immune system and once they fall sick, their WBC count will be above 9,000 as well as those with auto-immune disorder.

How lingzhi improves the immune system?

Referring to the diagram above, let me explain one by one how linghzi helps each stage of our internal immune system. You can imagine it as strengthening and giving extra equipment to the soldiers during the war.

Phagocytes:

  • Lingzhi re-inforces and strengthens phagocytes
  • Helps eliminate the enemy (bacteria and viruses)
  • Tests have shown lingzhi increases activity of phagocytes
  • Supreses tumor cells

Natural killer cells:

  • Lingzhi increases activity of natural killer cells
  • Helps to promote vitality of NKC – to ensure we have lots of healthy cells

T-Cells:

Without going into much detail, T-cells consist of Th1 and Th2 cells which need to be in optimum balance. Th1 needs to be higher than Th2. In case Th1 is very low, the person will have a very weak immune system and fall sick easily. If Th2 is very high, auto-immune disease happens, such as allergies, eczema, lupus, etc.

  • Polysaccharides in lingzhi increase Th1 levels and Triterpenoids lower the Th2 cells
  • Lingzhi modulates functions of T Cells

B-Cells:

  • Lingzhi promotes the production of antibodies (known as immunoglobulins)
  • The antibodies are like weapons to fight off the enemy
  • Antibodies also remember not to let the same enemies (viruses/bacteria) in next time they show up

So overall, lingzhi enhances production of immune cells and strengthens the lifespan of white blood cells. No western medicine in the market is able to increase Th1 levels and lower the Th2 levels at the same time. This is why lingzhi is known as the modulator as it strengthens the immunity, but doesn’t cause allergies.

Simple Steps to take care of your Immune System

Besides consuming lingzhi and having a balanced diet, it is important to do these few simple steps to ensure we keep a healthy immune system.

  1. Less Stress – besides external factors, a lot of the stress is caused due to colon disfunction. If we don’t have enough good bacteria in our colon, ‘happy hormones’ are not being produced by the colon. This is where the importance of probiotics comes into play as well as good source of fibre.
  2.  Sleep Early – body needs time to detox.                                                                                                         What Time Should You Sleep
By James PangFrom 11pm to 3am, most of your blood circulation concentrates in your liver. Your liver gets larger when filled with more blood. This is an important time when your body undergoes detoxification process. Your liver neutralizes and breaks down body toxins accumulated throughout the day.

From 3am to 5am, most blood circulation concentrates in your lung. What should you do at this moment? Well, you should exercise and breathe in fresh air. Take in good energy into your body, preferably in a garden. At this time, the air is very fresh with lots of beneficial negative ions.

From 5am to 7am, most blood circulation concentrates in your large intestine. What should you do at this moment? You should poop! Pass out all unwanted poop from your large intestine. Prepare your body to absorb more nutrients throughout the day.

From 7am to 9am, most blood circulation concentrates in your stomach. What should you do at this moment? Have your breakfast! This is your most important meal in a day. Make sure you have all the required nutrients from your breakfast. Not having breakfast causes lots of health problems for you in the future.

  3. Keep your internal body temperature at the optimum (around 37 C)
    • No cold water or beverages
    • Consume food and drinks to warm up your spleen (ginger, wild yam, barley, etc). Too much raw salads or other vegetables can cool down the body too much as well.
    • If you easily get cold feet, it means your body temperature is too low and you have bad blood circulation
  4. Exercise – we need exercise not only to keep out bodies in shape, but we need it to increase the oxygen intake. Oxygen in our blood is crucial for our cells to live in a healthy environment.

If you or any of your family members is constantly falling sick, meaning at least once a month or every two months. This means the immune system is very weak, the soldiers on the front line of defense are not strong enough to battle the enemies (viruses and bacteria) and therefore even minimal exposure to these will cause flu and fever. In case of those with auto-immune disease this means your immune system is overactive and needs to be lowered to reach the optimum. Lingzhi can actually treat any disease which steroids can cure as their functions are very similar. The only main difference is that lingzhi causes NO side effects so it is a much safer treatment.

Shuang Hor Factory and Greenhouse Farm Visit

My long anticipated visit to Shuang Hor factory and farm has finally happened. I was so excited to finally get on the plane to Taiwan to see with my own eyes what I’ve been hearing about in the past few years. It was definitely not disappointing, in fact it was even more than I anticipated.

The first stop was the Shuang Hor distribution centre in Taiwan (over there they call it Double Crane). That was amazingly neat and walls were filled with detailed explanation about the sophisticated instruments used as well as information about the hi-tech greenhouse farm.

image1

It also included all the third party accreditation and certificate which Shuang Hor has received in the past.

The Factory

The factory visit was definitely a very memorable experience for me. It was amazing how warmly welcomed we were by the factory manager as well as our lead researcher Dr. Chen, we truly felt like VIP guests. I travelled with a group of Shuang Hor distributers as well as some consumers so our passion and admiration for lingzhi and other Shuang Hor products was very much obvious. Dr. Chen took us for a tour and stopped to explain every process available in the factory. Isn’t that amazing? Not only were we introduced to each and every step of lingzhi production, but the tour was done by the lead researcher who has dedicated his life to lingzhi research and development. I must say I felt very honored, especially knowing what kind of amazing developments Dr. Chen did and brought lingzhi to another level.

image5

Through the glass windows we could see each step of the production as well as the strict quality control preformed by the very experienced staff. That’s when the transparency of Shuang Hor company was laid out right in front of me. I’m not very familiar with other factories out there, but I believe not many companies put so much attention in showing their distributers or consumers exactly how they make the product, from growing it to extracting and then packaging.

image6

These are the Shuang Horians that I travelled with and even though most of them I didn’t really know before the trip, we all clicked so well together and really had an amazing trip. You could really see and sense the Shuang Hor culture all around. Shuang Hor culture is based on some very important virtues; honesty, transparency, self improvement, respect, helping others and just overall positivity. I value a lot all those things in my life and therefore it was very easy for me to fit in and find a very comfortable working environment.

image7

Dr Chen gave a brief presentation about lingzhi, new developments and well as the factory information. After that we were given a chance to ask any question that came to mind. The questions were mostly regarding different diseases and what would be the appropriate dosage to prescribe. Dr. Chen was always ready with the explanation as well as the recommended dosage. This of course was extremely useful for our future cases that we might come across and can easily recommend the products and dosage.

The Farm

This was the most exciting part of this trip for me. I was so looking forward to finally have the honor to be in the presence of this amazing mushroom and see it being cultivated. All the pictures and videos I’ve seen over the past years didn’t do the justice to this amazing greenhouse.

image9

We were so lucky to go inside one of the greenhouses before it was harvested. I must admit I was a bit nervous as I wanted to make sure I don’t touch any lingzhi or contaminate it in any way. Even when we were entering the greenhouse we had to rush in as the door is not suppose to stay open for too long as that will change the perfect temperature. Unbelievable how much attention to detail is given to make sure lingzhi grows in the most perfect environment to ensure it reaches its maximum efficacy.

image10

Again Dr. Chen was with us every step of the way to explain all the processes of the greenhouse farm which includes perfect temperature, clean air, no pesticide or chemicals, harvesting at the perfect time, drying it perfectly to ensure all the active components don’t get destroyed.

image11

Finally I got to touch the lingzhi🙂 They sacrificed a few bags of lingzhi for us to touch and take pictures with, of course these could not be used anymore. It looks so fake, doesn’t it?

image12

This is the water wall used to cool the greenhouses to a perfect temperature without being too harsh or too sudden temperature changes. The greenhouses are so well equipped in order to grow lingzhi whole year around, regardless of the weather and climate changes.

image13  image3

This is what it looks like to be surrounded with abundance of lingzhi. Of course Dr. Chen did warn us not to bite into linghzi as we wouldn’t get much benefits as it is made up of very coarse fibre which we can’t digest. He did mention that there was someone many years ago who bit into a whole row of lingzhi while visiting the farm.🙂

image5

Three new greenhouses were being built, as the demand is getting higher and higher. In case you are wondering, like I was, how do they make sure there is no bacteria and other contamination without use of chemicals. Well, it fairly simple, once they harvest the lingzhi, they will open up all the nets from the glass roof and let the sun heat up the greenhouse to around 50 degrees celsius. This ensures all the bacteria gets destroyed. As for the rodents, they cover all the metal rods with zinc and that keeps the rodents away. If only more farms would employ such a simple and green way.

Dr Chen was always ready to answer any of our questions every step of the way. We were then brought into the storage area where lingzhi is tried and kept in the plastic bags. It was very reassuring to note that Shuang Hor makes sure that lingzhi will not run out any time soon.

image6

We managed to smell the lingzhi as it was being dried in these containers you can see bellow. The drying process takes three days and the reason for using this system to dry them is to make sure non of the important components get destroyed. The smell actually reminded me of porcini mushrooms, but not as intensive as that.

image7

Besides being amazed by Shuang Hor’s factory and farm, I was really happy being surrounded by so many happy and positive people. This journey was rather emotional for me, but in a very good way. I have changed a lot in the way I think and do things throughout this one year that I’ve been traveling the Shuang Hor journey. This trip reassured many things for me and opened up my eyes even more to what attracted me to Shuang Hor business in the first place. Their dedication to ensuring we get the best possible products, to building positive and good hearted leaders. Positive and happy people are able to spread the joy and that is definitely something we need more of in our lives. I feel very proud to be part of this family and I’m looking forward to helping more people and spread more positivity around.

I’m looking forward to another visit, hopefully next year, and I hope I will be able to bring more friends along. For those who have any questions regarding the trip or Shuang Hor in general, please feel free to email me at health4life83@gmail.com.

Don’t ignore your cholesterol!

I often hear people say they have a slight increase in their cholesterol reading, and most of the time they don’t do anything about it. Increased cholesterol levels are the first warning sign to tell you that your blood vessels are going to get ‘dirty’ due to the cholesterol build up. It works the same way as a sewage drain pipes; if too much dirt gets caught in it and nobody flushes it or scrubs the dirt our after a while the water flow will get smaller and smaller and eventually no water will be able to flow through.

atery build up(2)

As you can see from the image above, the cholesterol particles continue building up until plaque forms and after certain time this build up causes blood vessels to become narrow and in severe cases the blood vessels can actually burst. Therefore, the blood flow can become rather restricted and this can cause stroke and heart attack.

Process of cholesterol plaque formation:

  • Damaged endothelium. The smooth, delicate lining of blood vessels is called the endothelium. High cholesterol, smoking, high blood pressure, or diabetes can damage the endothelium, creating a place for cholesterol to enter the artery’s wall.
  • Cholesterol invasion. “Bad” cholesterol (LDL cholesterol) circulating in the blood crosses the damaged endothelium. LDL cholesterol starts to accumulate in the wall of the artery.
  • Plaque formation. White blood cells stream in to digest the LDL cholesterol. Over years, the toxic mess of cholesterol and cells becomes a cholesterol plaque in the wall of the artery.

Food which causes high cholesterol:

  • Food that contributes to high levels of blood cholesterol contains too much saturated fat, transfat, and dietary cholesterol.
  • Saturated fat is a main dietary culprit in plaque buildup. It’s found in foods like whole milk, high-fat cheese, ice cream, sausage, and hot dogs
  • Trans fat is found in fried foods and fast foods, frozen pizza, margarine, cake, cookies, and more.
  • Dietary cholesterol is found only in animal products, such as eggs, meat, and cheese.

Treatments for clogged or narrowed arteries:

  • Angiography, angioplasty, and stenting: Using a catheter inserted into an artery in the leg, doctors can enter diseased arteries. This procedure is called cardiac catheterization. Blocked arteries are visible on a live X-ray screen. A tiny balloon on the catheter can be inflated to compress cholesterol plaque in the blocked arteries. Placing metal stents helps to keep open blocked arteries. These stents act like small balloons to expand the blockage in the artery.19005
  • Bypass surgery: Surgeons harvest a healthy blood vessel from the leg or chest. They use the healthy vessel to bypass blocked arteries.

Of course both of these procedures are very risky and reserved only for severe cases. In other, more milder cases, doctors will usually tell you to change your diet and prescribe cholesterol lowering medication. However, these medications have many side effects and can severely damage your liver, intestine and even muscles. They also also carry warnings that memory loss, mental confusion, high blood sugar, and type 2 diabetes are possible side effects. This is the reason why many people opt not to take the medication and completely ignore their high cholesterol reading. Even changing the diet can be a real challenge for most and it is not so effective in reversing the damage.

Aterosclerosi

How can Lingzhi help?

  1. Lowers the cholesterol – lingzhi has the ability to lower the bad cholesterol and prevent the liver from producing an excessive amount of cholesterol. In 2004, Swiss researches used an animal testing model on hyperlipidemic mini-pigs and found that lingzhi effectively reduced total cholesterol by 20% and levels of bad cholesterol (LDL) by up to 27%. In 2005, the same Swiss research team discovered that the cholesterol-lowering mechanism of ganoderma was a result of ganoderma triterpenoids (ganoderic alcohol and ganoderic acid) inhibiting the bio-synthesis of cholesterols in the liver of the mini-pigs.

Testimony 1

Just recently we had a consumer in his 50s, who was diagnosed with blocked blood vessel and was suppose to go for surgery in order to insert the stent. He decided to give lingzhi a try first before going through such a risky surgery. He consumed 12 capsules daily of Yung Kien Lingzhi for 6 months. He went for another detailed check up after that and the doctor found that the blockage was no longer there.

Testimony 2

There was a case of husband and wife in their 30s; wife had low blood pressure and the husband had extremely high blood pressure. Husband’s cholesterol reading was high as well. They both started consuming Yung Kien Lingzhi, 6 capsules per day. They were closely monitoring their blood pressure at home. After 3 months they saw significant changes in their readings and within 6 months their pressure was normalized.

If you know anyone who has increased cholesterol, even slightly please inform them to take certain steps in order to reduce the risk of it leading to some serious problems. Diet is definitely the first thing that needs to be adjusted in order to reduce the fat and cholesterol in the blood. Increase in good quality fibre will be able to absorb a lot of the fat and cholesterol from our blood as well. Lingzhi is very effective in not only helping when the damage has already been done, but also in preventing the chance of increase in cholesterol all together.

Stay Healthy,

Dina
